During the COVID-19 pandemic, John worked closely with public, Catholic and independent education leaders, public health officials and the education workforce to maintain continuity of learning and manage risk. South Australia experienced relatively few school closure days compared with other jurisdictions — keeping students connected to school at a time when that connection mattered most.

Respected across political boundaries for integrity, calm judgment and a collaborative approach, John brings particular value to organisations working through decisions that involve government, regulation, public accountability or significant stakeholder complexity. He understands how institutions make decisions, how policy is shaped and implemented, and where the pressure points lie.

A Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, John currently serves as a non-executive director of ServiceFM, The Front Project, and Grandcarers SA. He brings to board and advisory roles a combination of strategic perspective, governance discipline and direct experience leading large, complex systems through reform and uncertainty.

Hon John Gardner GAICD served as a Member of the South Australian Parliament for sixteen years, including as Minister for Education, Leader of the House and Deputy Leader of the South Australian Liberal Party. He established John Gardner Consulting to bring that experience to organisations navigating complex strategic, governance, policy and stakeholder challenges.

John's public service included leadership across some of South Australia's most demanding institutional environments. As Minister for Education, he led one of the state's largest public sector portfolios, with a $4 billion budget and approximately 30,000 staff, alongside broader sector leadership responsibilities across public, Catholic and independent schools. John had oversight of a $1.5 billion infrastructure program that delivered five new schools and upgrades to more than 100 other sites.

His tenure delivered system reforms including the transition of Year 7 to high school, the introduction of the phonics check and the Literacy Guarantee Unit, flexible industry pathways for senior secondary students, and reforms to strengthen TAFE SA's governance and quality systems — including the appointment of a new board and a new quality framework supporting the organisation's successful re-accreditation.
